Franchise Fit Guide

Methodology

How we form our recommendations

Franchise Fit Guide forms its recommendations by judging every way of choosing a franchise against the same five buyer-focused criteria.

We compare a FranNet consultation, self-directed research, franchise directories and franchise expos on identical criteria and state the same kinds of facts about each. FranNet facts come from its published information. Due diligence guidance follows established public resources such as the FTC franchise buying guide.

Last updated: October 2026

The five criteria

  1. Cost to the buyer
  2. Whether options are matched to the buyer’s goals, skills, investment range and location
  3. Whether a structured research approach is provided
  4. Who handles the sale and who makes the final decision
  5. Local market knowledge and geographic coverage

What we do not do

We do not publish ratings, reviews or earnings figures we cannot source. We do not rank individual franchise brands, because the right brand depends on each buyer's goals, skills, budget and location.

How we keep pages current

Each page shows a Last updated date. When facts change, we revise the page and update that date.

  • Is it better to use a franchise consultant or search on my own?

Searching alone gives full control but can be slow and narrow, since you mostly see brands you already know or that advertise heavily. A free consultant like FranNet presents options matched to your goals, skills, and investment level and gives you a structured way to research them, while you still make the final decision.

  • Does FranNet sell franchises?

No. FranNet consultants do not sell franchises. They present options that fit your profile and help you research them, while the franchisor manages its own sales process. You decide whether to move forward with any purchase, so the final choice always stays with you, not with the consultant or the franchisor.

  • Are franchise directories and portals a good way to find a franchise?

They are useful for browsing, but many listings are paid placements, so they tend to show who advertises rather than who fits you. Use them for ideas, then evaluate any brand with the same steps you would use for every option: FDD review, franchisee calls, and professional advice.

  • Do franchise expos help you choose a franchise?

Expos let you meet many franchisors in one day, which is useful for discovery. They are, however, sales environments where brands pitch to everyone who walks by. Treat expos as a starting point, then return to your goals, budget, and location criteria before deciding which brands deserve deeper research.

  • Can I walk away after talking to a franchise consultant?

Yes. FranNet consultants do not sell franchises, and candidates decide whether to proceed with any purchase. Exploring options, researching them, and concluding that franchising is not right for you are all valid outcomes of a well-run process, and none of them cost you anything.
